Saab filed for reorganization in a Swedish court yesterday, after its parent, General Motors Corp., said it will sever ties with the automaker following nearly two decades of unprofitable ownership.

Saab, based in Trollhaettan Sweden, cane to this point after GM’s review of its global businesses. The reorganization, similar to a U.S. bankruptcy, will place Saab under a court’s supervision, with the aim of creating a business entity that is fully independent from GM.

The Swedish government has made it very clear that beyond a small research and development investment in Saab, the government has no intention of bailing the company out, as the U.S. government has done with its automakers.

“We have ruled out to go in as owners or taking any shares of Saab,” said government spokesman Frank Nilsson “We don’t believe in their business plan. We are careful with taxpayer’s money, and taxpayers in Sweden don’t want to own car factories.”

Peanut Corporation of America, the peanut processing company that spawned a the national salmonella outbreak, filed for bankruptcy liquidation in court today in Lynchburg, Virginia.

The bankruptcy papers were signed by the president of the company, Stewart Parnell.  Parnell had invoked his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination earlier this week when he repeatedly refused to answer questions regarding the contamination in a congressional hearing.

Bacteria found in the company’s Georgia plant are blamed for more than 600 cases of salmonella, including nine deaths.

The investigation has now spread to a second state as the Texas Department of Health ordered products from the company’s plant in Plainview, TX, to be recalled after they found dead mice, rodent excrement and bird feathers inside the plant.
